Antonio Galloni Vinous
The 2005 Barolo San Rocco offers lovely immediacy, but next to Azelia's other 2005s, it comes across as a bit flat and one-dimensional. Still, all things considered, the 2005 has aged well and appears to have enough pedigree to drink well for another decade or so. The flavors are dark, bold and incisive, with plenty of new French oak influence. The San Rocco was aged in French oak barrels of which around 30% were new.

Wine Advocate
The 2005 Barolo San Rocco screams with the essence of Serralunga in its dark fruit, spices, licorice and sweet French oak. Today the wine is massive, but its inner sweetness occasionally makes an appearance, with pretty balsamic nuances that emerge from behind a wall of imposing tannins. The San Rocco lacks a little polish, but much of that should come with time. I would not be surprised to see this bottle merit a higher score in a few years. Azelia remains one of my favorite under-the-radar producers in Piedmont. Proprietor Luigi Scavino fashions gorgeous wines from his vineyards in Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga.

Wine Spectator
Shows ripe strawberry aromas, with sandalwood and violet. Full-bodied, with big, juicy and velvety tannins. Round and beautiful. Long and flavorful. Complex.

Winery Information
The Azienda Agricola Azelia, in the centre of the area of Barolo production, is nowadays composed of 16 hectares and it produces, on average, 80,000 bottles per year. Luigi and Lorella Scavino and their son, Lorenzo are the current winemakers, producing excellent Nebbiolo wines from Top Barolo Crus - Castiglione Falletto & Serralunga d'Alba, along with Dolcetto from the best-kept single vineyard in Montelupo Albese, outside the area of Barolo.
The style is defined by its elegance with not overly powerful structure and the quality is impressively consistent and improving by the contribution of modern techniques. Great respect & care is given to the vineyard work. Wine is made of old vines which produce very few grapes and the low yields are further reduced through the green harvest, indispensable to select fruits, to have a uniform ripening and an impeccable quality.

Wine Note
100% Nebbiolo varietal, sourced from Serralunga d'Alba. On average of 55 year old vines and matured 24 months in small barrels.
Fleshy, extremely focused. Here Serralunga is present with signs of licorice, spices and dark fruits. Cherry, currant and blueberry melt harmoniously together. Velvety and sweetly ripe, with splendidly integrated tannins. San Rocco gives an impression of great power, austerity, with an incredible aging potential. Pure complexity. A strong character. Monumental.

Pairing
Pair with roasted game dish (herb-crusted roast lamb rack), braised beef and truffle.
