Antonio Galloni Vinous
The 2008 Barolo Margheria opens with a sweet, inviting bouquet redolent of hard candy, flowers, mint and licorice. Deceptively medium in body, the Margheria packs quite a bit of punch, even if that isn't totally obvious at the outset. Layers of dark fruit flow through to a powerful, incisive finish laced with dried flowers and spices. The Margheria is notable for its intensity and textural depth. It is another super-classy wine from Azelia.

The 2008 Barolo Margheria opens with a sweet, inviting bouquet redolent of hard candy, flowers, mint and licorice. Deceptively medium in body, the Margheria packs quite a bit of punch, even if that isn’t totally obvious at the outset. Layers of dark fruit flow through to a powerful, incisive finish laced with dried flowers and spices. The Margheria is notable for its intensity and textural depth. It is another super-classy wine from Azelia. For the Margheria the estate did not encourage fast malos by heating the cellar after the alcoholic fermentation. Instead, the malos were allowed to occur naturally the following spring, a much more traditional approach that worked beautifully.

Wine Spectator
A sanguine red, with graphite and sawdust flavors accented by tea. This is taut and firms up on the finish, but the tea, tobacco and spice notes linger.

Winery Information
The Azienda Agricola Azelia, in the centre of the area of Barolo production, is nowadays composed of 16 hectares and it produces, on average, 80,000 bottles per year. Luigi and Lorella Scavino and their son, Lorenzo are the current winemakers, producing excellent Nebbiolo wines from Top Barolo Crus - Castiglione Falletto & Serralunga d'Alba, along with Dolcetto from the best-kept single vineyard in Montelupo Albese, outside the area of Barolo.
The style is defined by its elegance with not overly powerful structure and the quality is impressively consistent and improving by the contribution of modern techniques. Great respect & care is given to the vineyard work. Wine is made of old vines which produce very few grapes and the low yields are further reduced through the green harvest, indispensable to select fruits, to have a uniform ripening and an impeccable quality.

Wine Note
100% Nebbiolo varietal. In 2004 Luigi decided to age part of this Cru in large casks - an exemplary work. From it Margheria takes its best from itself. 50 year-old vines and aged 28 months in large casks. Complex aromas, black fruits, licorice and spices in the typical Serralunga style. Energetic. The tannins frame the structure giving density and deepness to the wine. Mineral, earthy, salty. Impressive.

Pairing
Pair with roasted game dish (herb-crusted roast lamb rack), braised beef and truffle.
